BROADBAND INTERNET IN NIGERIA

Nigeria as a nation started to exist on october 1st 1960. from then on few nigerians have access to internet. then in the advent of gsm and cdma network, it change the outlook of internet service providers.
Then in nigeria internet service provider are solely base on internet pole and mask on air of which the service are very poor.the only place for internet access was in the cybercafe.
Now, this era of global system for mobile communications like MTN,ZAIN,GLOBACOM,AND ETISALAT and Code division mutilple access like STARCOMM, VISAFONE, MULTILINK, AND OTHERS. These service providers are providing both voice and data services either in sms, voice called, data internet, 3G video called, roaming and international calls through fiber optic cables or through internet cables that connect nigeria to canada or usa. virtually, all the service provider in nigeria provide internet access but some are better than the others.

DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED IN BROADBAND INTERNET
EDGE is enhanced data rate for gsm evolution.
2G is second generations technology with a speed of 240kbps.
GPRS is general packet radio service. is a dial up services with a speed of 56kbps gprs also knowns as the first generation technology.
GSM is global system for mobile communications. the platform these services provide base to offer internet access to nigeria people. most of the phone and the mordem are base on gsm technology. these device have some specific frequency and band.
the gsm is a combinations of gprs and edge that is G and 2G broadband service.
HSDPA is high speed downlink packet access. the latest broadband access that is 3.5G, it is upgrade of 3G from UMTS. the download speed of 3.5G is 3.6mbps while that of 3G is 460kbps
WCDMA is wideband code division multiple accsee is a near hsdpa with a download speed of 1.8-3.6mbps depends area and lotions of the service providers.

MTN is mobile telecommunications of nigeria
mtn has GPRS& EDGE is widely available. 3G/UMTS/HSDPA/WCDMA is not widely available but some seleted cities and town.
zain > GPRS/EDGE is widely available. 3G/UMTS/HSDPA/WCDMA is not widely available but some selected cities and town. it was formerly restricted to postpaid customer but now is available to both postpaid and prepaid customer.
Glo / GPRS/EDGE is widely available. 3G/UMTS/WCDMA is not widely available but some selected town and cities. formerly the service was restricted to contract customer but now is available to both customers.
Etisalat GPRS/EDGE widely available. but is only available is some cities and town. they clain that their EDGE is a near 3G/UMTS service of which in practice is a fails assumptions.
